Spaulding for Children has volunteer opportunities available for both individuals and groups that support the children and families we serve. Below you will find a brief description of some of these opportunities.

Open Your Heart 365

What: Open Your Heart 365 is a program to provide the children that Spaulding serves with new clothing and toys.
Who: Individuals or Groups
When: Year-Round
How: Groups can participate by holding Open Your Heart 365 donation drives with their company, club or association. Individuals can participate by joining one of the Open Your Heart 365 Committees or by donating new items to the closet.
Where: The Open Your Heart 365 closet is located at the Spaulding for Children offices in Southfield.

Teen Support Groups

What: Spaulding for Children is looking for adult men and women to serve as mentors for our Teen Girls and Teen Boys Support Groups.
Mentors attend monthly meetings, act as role models, contribute to the meeting planning and help to facilitate sessions. Individual
mentor relationships can be developed based on the Mentor’s and Teen’s wants and needs.
Who: Individuals over the age of 21
When: Support groups meet at 6:30 p.m. on the second Monday of each month. Planning conference calls are held the first Monday of each month and occasional evening or weekend activities are planned.
How: Potential mentors are asked to meet with our current mentors prior to attending a meeting. Guests wishing to join the group will be asked to complete Volunteer Forms which include a criminal background check and a central registry clearance.
Following the submission of their volunteer forms and passing of clearances, mentors are asked to attend a mentor orientation and training.
Where: Teen Support Groups meet at the Spaulding for Children offices in Southfield.

Ice Cream Social

What: Each year Spaulding for Children holds an Ice Cream Social, a tradition started by one of the agency founders, Warren Spaulding. Over 250 foster, adopt, kinship and birth families attend this day of food, fun, games and entertainment.
Who: Individuals and Groups
When: Saturday, July 2008, 10am-2pm
How: Volunteers are needed to assist with all aspects of the event including planning activities, seeking donations of food and prizes, set-up, cooking, face painting, activity coordinators and more.
Where: Spaulding for Children’s Ice Cream Social takes place in the large pavilion at Metropolitan Beach located in Clinton Township.

Family Holiday Party

What: Each year Spaulding for Children holds a Holiday Party for nearly 300 foster, adopt, kinship and birth families. This
evening event includes dinner, crafts, entertainment, visits with Santa and gifts.
Who: Individuals and Groups
When: Friday, December 7, 2007 - 5:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
How: Volunteers are needed to assist with all aspects of the event including planning activities, seeking donations of food and gifts, set-up, cooking, activity coordinators and more.
Where: Spaulding for Children’s Family Holiday Party has been held in a local church auditorium, but we are open to new fun locations.

Dave Thomas Celebrity Cookoff

What:

The Dave Thomas Celebrity Cookoff is held in major cities across the United States in conjunction with Wendy’s International®, The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption™, and Benihana Restaurants.

Local and national celebrities, media personalities and corporate leaders sizzle as they take over the hibachi style grills at Benihana to prepare a steak and shrimp dinner for ten guests seated around their grill.

The event also includes a cocktail reception and silent auction with all proceeds benefiting Spaulding for Children.

Who: Individuals and Groups
When: This event takes place on Tuesday, September 16, 2008. Volunteers are needed for set-up from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. and during the event from 5 p.m. – 11 p.m.
How: Volunteers are needed to serve on various planning committees, event day set-up, and evening support such as auction runners, suite hosts, greeters, check-in, etc.
Where: The Dave Thomas Celebrity Cookoff takes place at Benihana Restaurant in Troy, MI. Volunteer training will take place one to two weeks prior to the event at Spaulding for Children’s offices in Southfield.

Community Outreach

What: Volunteers are need to help Spaulding for Children increase public awareness about the thousands of children in Metro Detroit waiting to be adopted. By dispelling the many misconceptions about adopting from the foster care system and recruiting new foster and adoptive parents, these volunteers can help find homes for these deserving children.
Who: Individuals and Groups
When: Year-Round – Days & Evenings – Weekdays & Weekends
How: Volunteers are needed to man information booths at community events, fairs and expositions. Volunteers are also needed to contact community service groups, churches and associations to arrange for Spaulding Staff or trained volunteers to speak to their organizations.
Where: Community outreach projects take place throughout the Metro Detroit area.

Third Party Fundraisers

What: A Third Party Fundraiser is a fundraiser planned and produced by another organization or group with all or part of the proceeds going to support Spaulding for Children.
Who: Organizations, Companies, Associations, Sororities/Fraternities, Churches, etc.
When: Year Round
How: Please refer to Spaulding for Children’s Third Party Guidelines.
